The School Resource Officer program was developed and implemented in 1950 in Flint, Michigan, with the intentions of improving the rapport between the youth and police officers, provide a full-time police officer in the schools and provide instruction to students, faculty and staff on police-related topics. Flagler County put its first deputy sheriff in the schools in the 1970's, with the program expanding as the county grew.
The Sheriff's Office is committed to working closely with the Flagler County School District to provide professional service in the educational setting. In 2006, the Flagler County School District designated a single point of contact to work closely with the School Resource Deputies and provide consistency throughout the district.
Currently, there are five deputies assigned to two high schools, two middle school and deputy the rotates between each elementary school. In addition the unit has a dedicated supervisor. The unit provides services to over 11,000 students in Flagler County. School Resource Deputies are responsible for handling calls for service within their respective schools, providing instruction and counseling on law related topics to students, faculty and staff.
