Marine Unit
With 26 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline and more than 500 miles of canals and waterways running through Flagler County, the Marine Patrol Division has a mission to fight crime on the waterways.
Two boats and two sworn law enforcement officers are assigned to this unit.
Two Kawasaki jet skis are on loan to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office by US 1 Powersports Center located in St. Augustine. These units enhance our ability to handle off-shore emergency situations and aid in reducing response times as they can be launched directly into the surf anywhere along the shoreline. They are also used to patrol the canals and inland waterways throughout Flagler County.
In addition to crime prevention, the boats and their operators have been used in search and rescue missions on waterways throughout the county.
The Marine Patrol Division was created by Captain Grady Prather, Jr.; the longest serving deputy in the history of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Captain Prather served the residents of Flagler County for over thirty years, continuing as a reserve deputy following his retirement from the Sheriff’s Office in January 2008.
Captain Prather created and led the Marine Patrol and Dive Units after working his way up the ranks from dispatcher in 1975, to road patrol, to captain. Captain Prather passed away November 17, 2009. As a tribute to his dedication and faithful public service to the community, the Flagler County Board of Commissioners signed a proclamation renaming the road leading to Herschel King Park to Grady Prather, Jr. Cove.
